A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

Last night in my SURFACE DECORATION class, we played with texture & color while making a crazy amount of colorful slabs. Many of the textures were made with my collection of MKM Pottery Tools handrollers… which my students love every time I bring them out to share!!!

A little stamping fun in the studio. Turning a plain platter into something a bit more special. All done with one handmade clay stamp pressed in one by one… by one… by one… by one…

Looks like someone was working pretty hard overnight!!!

With a bit of a chill in the air, I was surprised this morning by the wind & waves coming in off the lake. Sure, it’s supposed to warm up later today… but this was a bit of a brisk way to start the day!

Waxing poetic about how much I love waxing bottoms… glazing not so much!!!
But it’s a necessary step in replenishing my inventory for the NORTHERN ILLINOIS POTTERY TOUR just a week & a half away! Mark your calendar for June 6th & 7th.

So I remember buying this & planting it last Spring. Did I keep the tag?… of course not.
But I’m loving that it survived the Winter & is blooming in my garden right now on tall stems.
The plant looks kinda like a ‘columbine’ of some sort… but the flowers aren’t even close?!

UPDATE : Thanks to Tracy… apparently this is Columbine Meadow Rue

Another warm & quiet ride along the lakefront this morning. Not a lot of clouds today, but plenty of beautiful sky. The boats are returning to the harbors… a sure sign that summer can’t be all that far away!!!

The folks at MKM Pottery Tools just did a really great post about my hybrid mugs
on their Instagram feed. I love their textured handrollers…
and it seems they love my mugs!!! A perfect collaboration!

In case you’re wondering…
this hybrid mug was made with a #BHR-142 Basket Weave handroller.
They have tons of cool patterns… so check ‘em out!!!

More flowers from the weekend art fair! Another stamped & soda-fired vase…
hoping that these have a bit more life in them! I think they’re a bit “sturdier” than lilies?!
I guess we’ll find out soon enough???

After a weekend in my art fair booth, I’m hoping that these white lilies might have a few more days of “pretty” in them?! They still smell great… so that’s a good start!!!
