Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

This year’s addition to “The Ghoul Collection” has been a well guarded secret. The identity of which I have kept “under wraps” for a few weeks. I was trying to figure out my Ghoul-ish plan. And I didn’t want to share too much until I knew which direction they were going. Well, now they’re all made & drying. So I feel it’s safe to show off the “new ghoul in town” – The Mummy. Sure, I still need to paint them with underglaze, cover them with clear glaze, dry them and fire them. But I still have a couple days before “Art In The Barn.” Plenty of time, huh?… I hope at least…

As with every “ghoul” in the collection, these will be available in Limited Quantities.
When they’re gone, they’re gone!          At least until they rise from the dead again!

very nice. I did not catch your subtle hint in the last post about the characters. I’m apparently a bit slow. They look great. You can double purpose them for mummies day. I had made some a couple years ago and they all sold albeit slowly. Love the little feet.

Love these! I have been trying to do something similar, but not monsterly! Just trying to get strips of clay around pots. The pots dry ok, and bisque ok, but at glaze the strips cracked. Do you have any ideas why? Thanks so much

CHERYL – In the case of my Mummies… those extra cracks at glaze firing would be good! Ha! But I do understand that it might not be good in any other situation. I would make sure everything is scored, slipped & attached well. And then dried slowly under plastic. And make sure your clay strips being attached are of the same clay body with the same shrinkage rate. If it’s a continual problem, I would question if your glaze might have some “glaze fit” problems. Like it’s shrinking more during cooling than the clay? Do you have any issues with the same glaze on regular pots without the clay strip attachments?
