Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

And if it’s too soon for pumpkins…
then it’s REALLY too soon for Christmas ornaments!!!
But I made another new batch of them tonight too. Freshly thrown…
now I need to trim, stamp, slip, add hanger, bisque, glaze, fire!
Luckily, I’ve got a few months until Christmas, right?! Getting an early start…

hey. how do you make these ornaments?

NICOLE – These ornaments are thrown on the wheel as you see them on the blog post. I throw them off-the-hump. They’re basically a small cylinder collared in to close it up, and then detailed with grooves & bands. When they are leatherhard, I’ll trim the bottoms, flip them over, add a hand-built topper. Maybe add some colored slip accents. The last step is to fire them in the soda kiln.

Gary. it is a beautiful work you make! Can you take a picture of where you trim the bottoms and the hand built topper?
