Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

With three art fairs over the next three weekends, I knew that I needed to really “bulk-up” the inventory in advance. So I’ve been busily working in my studio trying to make LOTS of pots! I hope I have plenty of “hybrid mugs” for the three shows. Tomorrow I gotta start prepping, pricing & packing… dividing the inventory in three… something for everyone at every show!!!

Celebrating a little Mugshot Monday today with some “found flowers.” I’m not above “saving” some special event flowers from the trash to let them live a little longer in my studio! And I have plenty of mugs that will work as a fun vase for a few days!

So it’s been a busy week… with working all day, teaching three night classes, cleaning the kiln, biking & doing my taxes!!! Yes, I’m still working on my TAXES!!! But here’s the inside my soda kiln from last weekend… finally! Another beautiful firing with some great colors & flashing marks all the way through! Looking forward to spending some more time with each of these pieces as I start to prep & price them all for the upcoming art fair season! After I finish my taxes of course…

While another bisque kiln is firing, this first batch is ready to start glazing.
Lined up & ready for the first step… doing a little glaze inlay into the stamped impressions.

Working in the studio adding some colored slip accents & details to my mugs. Celebrating Mughshot Monday… and what better time to watch “The Great Canadian Pottery Throwdown” watching potters succeed & fail on Reality TV. Also fun to see that my Lillstreet Throwdown’ers had already done some of the same challenges in their class!!!

Handles attached and setting-up a bit. A lot of scoring & slipping… attaching & smoothing.

I tell my students all the time… I love making handles & I love making mugs.
Two relatively unpopular opinions!

For those of you attending NCECA this week… the national clay educators conference & trade show… be sure to check-out the folks at MKM POTTERY TOOLS! They’ve got some amazing hand rollers to try out… and some fun postcards they’re passing out!!!

Hey, lookey there… it’s ME!!! …and some of my soda-fired “hybrid mugs” on the MKM postcards!

If you stopped by my pottery page last night to shop for a SHAMROCK MUG… you might have seen that a red, red “Robin” came a bob, bob bobbin’ along… and “claimed” thirteen of the mugs for purchase! That would have been AMAZING… but slightly suspect. So I checked into it… and apparently the “Robin” should have worn her glasses and didn’t understand the process. Turns out she didn’t even want a mug!!! She just “liked” them!!!

So her Comment of MINE has been deleted and those Shamrock Mugs are still available! If you see one you want (with your glasses on)… just put a MINE in the Comment of that mug… and then I’ll confirm & follow-up with more info. Just scroll back to last night to see my mug post from last night.
