Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play
Categories: Chicago, special events

Tonight I went to the Chicago Theater with my friend Nancy for a great concert.
Okay, I will admit that it was an odd evening. And that’s putting it nicely…

The concert was Jackson Browne, with special guest David Lindley. So my friend Nancy
tells me that Jackson Browne is her all-time favorite pop star. And that she’s seen him
in concert over 50 times!!! Now I’m not sure I even know who he is?!

The concert started with an acoustic set with Jackson Browne & David Lindley.
I could tell right away that they are very talented, but I didn’t recognize a single song!!!
After intermission, Jackson Browne returned with his full band behind him. Again…
I could tell that they were all very talented. Again… didn’t recognize a single song!
It was very weird being in a sold-out concert where everyone is “totally into it” –
and me, kinda lost, not knowing anything?!

But then very close to the end, he did play a great rendition of “Running On Empty”…
finally, a song that I knew!!!

So today I was in the studio painting clear glaze on “my little monsters”…
but it was so BEAUTIFUL outside… and my bike was calling me again!
So… I decided to “skip out” for an afternoon ride with my friend Chris up to
the Chicago Botanic Garden. With a plan of returning to the studio after the ride
to finish glazing! During the ride, I was excited to pass another mileage milestone!

That’s 3,000 miles pedaled so far this year!
And there’s still at least another month before the weather starts to get bad…

And for the record… I did go back to the studio. I did finish glazing. And I did load the kiln.
Okay, so it was a LOT later than I expected, but the bike ride was well worth it.

Today was possibly the best “weather day” of the entire summer!
Beautiful sun, nice breeze and no humidity… beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
So what better place to spend it than going “back in time” to the Renaissance Faire!
Yes, I kid of hate to admit it… but I enjoy the Renaissance Faire… and no…
I DO NOT dress up in costume. That’s at least one step too far!

So went north just over the Illinois border to Bristol, Wisconsin where the annual
Renaissance Faire finds it’s midwest home. My friend Nancy came along for the ride
and enjoyed a day walking through the Middle Ages. Enjoying local artisans, strolling
minstrels, jugglers, and more! We did some shopping – and met a couple fun artists
along the way. Like a couple that does “needle felting” from Wayfarer’s Whimsy.
And Teresa Wooden, our favorite potter at the faire, from Stone Forest Pottery.

While a lot of the day is strolling through the Faire, there needs to be some relaxing
time here & there – like hanging out in the Sky Chairs… quite literally! Or walking through
the gardens, over the bridges and meadows. It’s always a great day at the Faire!

Part of the fun of the Renaissance Faire is watching all of the people dressed up
in elaborate costumes. And like I said, I am definitely NOT one of them!
But here are a just a few of them… a few of the “good” ones!

Although I must admit that my favorite character every year is the spider lady! She’s there
mysteriously & silently spinning her own yarn – and then building this elaborate web
that creates a canopy stretched between the trees… full of knick-knacks left behind.

But then again, here’s a few not so good costumes… and let me just say, there are more
than enough of them in “this” category to make your neck hurt from quick glances over
your shoulder!!! I know they encourage people to dress up at the Renaissance Faire…
but seriously… some people think it’s just an excuse to put on any costume and parade
around. Without friends or mirrors to tell them otherwise?! I’m always amused by the
wide “range” of costumes that aren’t even a bit Medieval – from Star Trek shirts, Asian
kimonos & Ewok capes… to fishnets, corsets and spandex stretched beyond belief?!

At the end of the day, we were leaving the Faire… with a final farewell from a blue
bubble-blowing fairy to bid us a fond adieu!

Oh yeah, one last thing… the food! Besides all of the usual treats like huge barbequed
turkey legs… we found a new favorite this time – deep fried macaroni & cheese! As well
as revisiting a great pizza place in Lake Bluff on the way home that I used to go to as a kid!

So I’ve finally poured through my photos… so here goes the story…
It’s the wedding celebration of my friend & potter Emily Murphy who is actually
the one responsible for “pushing me” to start this blog in the first place! And now
look at what’s happened… my blogging addiction is in full swing! Plus, you can
check out Emily’s blog that inspired me… www.potteryblog.com.

Last weekend was the celebration party for the marriage of Emily Murphy
and her longtime partner Ian Bicking. For as long as I’ve known Emily,
which has been MANY years now, she and Ian have always been together. Emily
and I have worked together for many years with our studios close to each other, sharing
ideas, business tactics and several kilns over the years. Then she moved to Minneapolis!
I must admit that I’ve always kind of considered them married in my mind. And on more
than one occasion, I even heard Emily introduce Ian to people as “her husband” just to
make it easier. So when the actual wedding happened last winter in their Minneapolis
living room, we weren’t overly surprised… it’s about time, right?! And then they pulled
together a great weekend celebration at their home in Minneapolis for their family & friends.
So that’s the set-up… and the main reason I went on such a whirlwind tour of Minnesota
last weekend! Although my clay adventures to Continental Clay & Northern Clay Center
were quite enticing too! 700-pounds of clay made it home with me!

After an extraordinary amount of organization and information from Emily,
not surprisingly, guests gathered at their new home which they moved into about
a year ago after fixing up the condemned old farmhouse. They’ve done a lot of work
on the place and now have a beautiful home… with Emily & Ian on the second floor,
sister Nora & kids on the first floor, guest bedroom in the third floor attic, and
Emily’s clay studio in the basement… including her brand new electric kiln!

Upon arriving at the party, it was quickly apparent that it was going to be a homespun
garden party… straight out of the pages of ReadyMade magazine! With homemade
pennant flags & white lights strung as a canopy from house to fence, chalkboard name
tags, simple flowers in painted soup cans, candles in glass Ball jars, and more! They had
thought of everything… including a hired babysitter to keep all of the kids entertained
during the ceremony in the yard next door. Although a couple kids did “escape” once
in awhile. There were bubbles, games and more to keep the kids happy!

Being the “crafty” couple that they are, they had worked for weeks prior to set it all up.
As well as create a wonderful “photo op” as you entered their back yard. It was an old
gold gilded frame on a vintage wallpapered piece of “wall” – with the picture missing
in the frame for you to stick your head through for the camera! Of course… we had to play!
I was spending the weekend with my friend & fellow potter Amy Higgason, so we took
a couple quick “mug shot masterpieces” while we were there.

While mingling before the ceremony, it was great to see some of our Lillstreet friends
outside of the studio… and in clean clothes! As well as Emily & Ian’s families & friends.
As a souvenir of the party, Emily had made small porcelain cups for each guest to choose
from and use during the party. It was an ideal opportunity for her to make small cups
to test her new glazes and do her first firing in her new kiln! So we each got to choose
our favorite cup… I was “thirsty,” Amy was “handmade.” Sarah & Julie came away with
two somewhat self-explanatory cups that compliment each other quite nicely!

So after the cozy, garden “cocktail” party, the ceremony began in the backyard.
Emily & Ian had their original wedding ceremony with close family & friends in
New Hampshire a few months ago. This party was a great chance for the rest of us
to celebrate the occasion. So the ceremony this past weekend was a ceremony “inspired”
by Quaker traditions. Which I hate to admit I’m not too aware of! But, there was a LOT
of silence?! Apparently, the couple sits silently in front of everyone. Then they state their
vows to each other… then sit down and there’s more silence! And more silence… quiet…
awkward… silent. And then, as people are “moved,” they would stand up and make a
comment, tell a story, share a memory or other anecdote. With a bit more silence
in between each person’s speech. No plan… just a bit of silence broken up by some
heartfelt stories. Once the stories got going, it was quite sentimental. Quite Quaker?!
Then we hung out for awhile, chatted with friends and then went over for dinner.
After dinner, it was back to the backyard for homemade desserts & music by a nice
Gypsy Quartet.Let’s just say… I tried almost all of the desserts and shared with Amy.
Apparently, Sarah & Julie were enjoying some desserts as well. Forks at the ready!

As the evening progressed, the sun was setting and the party was getting into full swing.
At one point, the setting sun cast a beautiful light upon the barn “garage” in the back.
The ambiance was wonderful as the barn lit up – as did the canopy of white lights!

As the sun went down, so did the temperatures. It rained for a few minutes and the temp
plummeted… and became a bit chilly. But no fear… we had a fire to keep us warm. And
a fire to make s’mores! When was the last wedding YOU went to and made s’mores?!!!

It was a wonderful day shared with a lot of friends – and Emily & Ian’s family. I’ve known
both of them for a long time and it’s great to see them sort of “finalizing” their big move
to Minneapolis with a major event like this. Moving forward in their new path and life
together. Congratulations Emily & Ian… and thanks for throwing such a great party.
I’m glad I could squeeze it in between my camp schedules and survive a treacherous
drive up there! It was well worth it…
thanks again!

This weekend is the perfect weekend to “escape” from the city.
It is once again the annoyance on the lake known as the Air & Water Show.
Cluttering the lakefront with thousands & thousands of people. Closing the
bike trail and littering the lakefront. All to see some boats and a couple planes.
Here’s an idea – sit by a harbor or drive out to O’Hare… don’t ruin my lakefront!

Luckily, I’m headed north for the weekend to play with friends and celebrate
my friend Emily’s recent nuptials. No boats. No planes. Just friends.

It’s been a busy two nights. Two nights of fun. Two night of music.
Two nights under the stars enjoying fine music, friends and food at Ravinia!
Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois is known for bringing a wide assortment
of music to the northern suburbs. Ravinia is a music venue with a large pavilion
and an even larger grassy meadow surrounding it with “lawn seats” for those of us
too cheap to pay for pavilion seats… plus the picnic is a BIG part of the experience!

So Friday night, after camp, I went up to Ravinia with my friend Nancy for a fun night
of retro fun. As a kid of the 70’s, I sang along and knew every word… as the concert was
a tribute to ABBA. Yes, it was a night with Fernando, Chiquitita and the Dancing Queen!
Okay, so it wasn’t the “real” ABBA – as they no longer perform and keep raking in
the royalty checks! Imagine how much they got from the musical & movie adaptation
of “Mamma Mia” – not to mention the resurgence of their own ABBA popularity.
Ravinia was packed – and SOLD OUT… including the lawn!

Then tonight, I returned for another night of music with my parents, aunt & cousin
for a night in the park with night of Broadway melodies. It was a night to celebrate
the 80th birthday of Broadway lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Famous for his wonderful
lyrics for many of the most popular modern musicals; including Gypsy, Sweeney Todd,
Sunday In The Park With George, Passions
, and A Little Night Music. The orchestra was
great – with vocal performances by Broadway legends Patti LuPone, Audra McDonald,
Michael Cerveris and George Hearn. I was a bit disappointed that the show was kind of short.
And they skipped over a lot of Sondheim classics like West Side Story and Into The Woods.
Plus, I’m not a huge fan of Patti LuPone – I think she’s overrated, a little brassy and annoying.
Audra McDonald was incredible, as were both gentlemen. So, even though the show wasn’t
everything I had hoped for, the evening was still great fun. Enjoying the park, the gardens,
the sculptures, the food and the fun with my family. Another fun night under the stars!

So, all in all it was another wonderful night at Ravinia Festival. Plus, we got to see a lot of
“beautiful people” as tonight was also the Ravinia Women’s Club fundraising black-tie gala!
So there were a lot of heavy-hitters in their finery milling about – plus the huge, decked-out
gala tent out in the large meadow area. Tuxes, ball gowns, ladies who lunch and more!

For the schedule of upcoming shows, check out the Ravinia website…

As if this morning’s sunrise weren’t exciting enough, I also passed another
big mileage milestone this morning. As I was pedaling along North Avenue Beach
I passed my 2,000-mile mark for the year! A milestone morning…
and a nice shot of where it happened – right in front of the Chicago skyline!

What could be better than a bag of fresh marshmallows?
A bag of REALLY BIG marshmallows!!!

Yes it’s true. These marshmallows are huge!… thank you Campfire brand!
I was first introduced to them over the Fourth of July down at Kel & Kelly’s.
I couldn’t believe it. Let’s just say… I have the palate of a four-year-old.
Nothing is ever too sweet. Nothing is ever too rich. Never too much frosting!
And I have on occasion polished off an entire bag of marshmallows on my own!

I was excited to see that they have made their way up to my grocery store…
so I picked up a bag of these HUGE confections for my adult wheel class tonight.
I find class is always more fun when they’re hopped up on sugar.
The same holds true for myself too… so I picked up a second bag for myself!!!

It’s already half gone!

For the past week, Chicago has been “transformed” with some movie magic
going on right in the heart of downtown. With streets closed all over the city,
there have been major car crashes, explosions and people falling out of buildings
all for the making of the next “Transformers” movie sequel. Changing the landscape
of Michigan Avenue – and transforming it into the “Smash-nificent Mile.
Quite a sight to see… especially if you weren’t aware of what was going on?!
