Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

Deep saturated colors early on. Layers of low-flying clouds.
And beautiful, early morning reflections at Belmont Harbor.

Followed by vibrant layers of golden orange tones.
And finally a shining bright sunrise. Another beautiful morning ride.

So I’m getting ready for another soda kiln firing next weekend. And this is my last bisque kiln before then. It may not by my tightest packed kiln ever, but I was pleased to get everything in… without too many open spaces. Cause you know how that kills me!

Kiln Layer #1 – wall pocket vases & mugs.

Kiln Layer #2 – large stamped platter, miniature vases and tiles.

Kiln Layer #3 – large stamped platter #2 and more tiles.

Kiln Layer #4 – ovals, teapots and urns.

Kiln Layer #5 – a few more ovals on a half shelf… and on top of other pots!

The new Fall session of the Beginning & Advanced Beginning Wheelthrowing class begins tonight at Lillstreet Art Center. Always a busy session… Summer’s almost over and people are looking for something new & fun to do. Luckily, eighteen people swooped in and filled my class. All wheels will be occupied tonight with eager hands waiting to get muddy!!! I feel sorry for those who waited too long to sign-up… and are now on my Waiting List?!!!

In case you’re wondering… I don’t have any classes starting the week of October 19th.
That’s only for the shorter 5-week introduction classes.

Okay, so I went with off-the-side!!!
Handles have been attached and colored slip accents have been added.
Now they’re drying on an elevated plastic grid to help speed up the drying process evenly. I’m running a little late… these will “hopefully” go into my bisque kiln later tonight? Very late tonight after I teach my pottery class, then a slow pre-heat overnight!!!

Just finished adding some color flashing slip accents to the teapots. I think this one is pretty much done… two more to go…

This morning was a colorful mix of clouds & contrails. Hard to tell where one started and the other one mixed in?! No matter what they were… it all added up to a spectacular sunrise!!!

My latest trio of teapots is one step closer. Still under wraps to keep them workable.
They now have their lids & spouts… just waiting for their handles!!!
Over-the-top  – or – off-the-side???

Another cloudy day… there’s a nice blue sky back there somewhere?!

Look what showed up on my shelving at ART IN THE GARDEN today?!
No one has claimed responsibility for the placard… but it’s OBVIOUSLY someone who knows me very well.

I narrowed it down… I know it showed up sometime on Saturday.
I thought it might be our host & metalsmith Amy Taylor’s doing as she has seen me at MANY an art fair always barefoot. She claimed no knowledge. Next up?… Cory McCrory. She too claimed no responsibility, but did fess up that she saw who did it. So I’m not positive… but I do think I’ve narrowed it down to one of my good “groupies”. Let me just say her name starts with a J… and rhymes with Trudy. I’m just sayin’…

And I’m saying THANK YOU!!!
It was a rough weekend personally and this little slice of whimsy brought a smile to my face. It reminded me that even though we’re currently dealing with some family health issues, there are so many good people out there to bring a smile & share a hug. This little warm fuzzy came at just the right time.

Sure, I’ve already had the “traditional” sunrise during my bike ride.
But here’s another version with a bit more of an “urban” vibe.
