Great Work Gary. I love your stamps and all your work. If I were near I would have been one of your students. But how do you get the chattering technique when the clay is not even leather hard. Thanks for the reply.

SARA – Thanks for the great comments. The chattering technique is very easy, but you need to commit and follow-thru. I throw the basic bowl on the wheel and then coat the entire inside with a contrasting color slip. The with a round edged rubber rib, you carefully tap it through the slip to reveal the clay color. The trick is that you’re tapping up & down, spinning the wheel, and moving upwards all at the same time. It’s a combination of tapping rhythm & even pressure. You don’t need to tap very hard to go through the wet slip. If your bowl was thrown well, and rib compressed, it should be sturdy enough. If you find you don’t like the patterned result, just smooth out the slip and do it again. You may have a few disasters before you get the right amount of pressure and consistent tapping. At first it can be a little nerve-wracking. But don’t give up. It’s a great effect and the glaze pools really well on the divots. Good luck – and thanks for checking in!!!
