Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play
Categories: cirque du soleil

Well, it’s finally Friday!!!… so we made it through another week of this craziness. To celebrate, or at least create a short diversion for awhile… the folks at Cirque du Soleil have posted another video special to help us pass the time. This week it’s clips from AMALUNA, BAZAAR and VOLTA.

Two out of three for me… I just haven’t had a chance to see BAZAAR anywhere live?!

You know I LOVE TIE-DYEbut this is a little crazy!!!

It’s not actually tie-dye, it’s just another bag of my reclaimed porcelain clay! It’s been sitting around in my studio for quite awhile. And the sides that were facing outwards to the light grew this wonderfully green “algae” of sorts. Luckily, it’s just a bit of wedging before it’s all good to go again! And since we already have face masks… no worries!

Looks like my friend Marsha is kicking off her day with a beautifully healthy fruit salad… even tastier when served in one of my handmade stamped bowls.

Also… be sure to check out Marsha’s pottery on Instagram with some beautiful glazing effects!

Stamped, trimmed and drying!
Not too shabby after a good afternoon “socially-distant” solo bike ride!!!

Looks like my friend Tiffany made it outside to enjoy the beautiful sunny weather & some Spring flowers… well, she was still safely “sheltering-at-home” as brought her own flowers out to her front porch. A safe hangout spot with good distance from anyone… and a nice BYOV.

BYOV : Bring Your Own Vase…
which just so happens to have been made by you-know-who!!!

Looks like Spring is finally making it’s way to Chicago.
I know times are tough, but you need to get outside for some fresh air
and to appreciate Nature’s beauty. Just be safe & socially distant.

Yesterday I went for a run, then a long walk with a friend and another run back home. Yes, it is weird to carry on a conversation with 8-feet of distance between you, but I felt SO MUCH better when I got home… both mentally & physically! Just be smart. Just be safe!

Okay, so it has finally happened.
I’ve succumbed.

All day yesterday I was planning what photo to post for TEXTURE TUESDAY. Only to find out it was already Wednesday!!! Yes, I have officially forgotten what day it is!!! I knew it was inevitable… but so soon???

At least I’ve just lost track of “days” …
and not “months or seasons” like this other guy!!!

So it was a tough day down in Peoria for some good friends of mine when the gusty winds blew through last Sunday! They have an amazing terraced backyard garden with large trees, tons of hostas & flowers, and a LOT of rustic decorative accents all over the place… even a ceramic totem pole made by “you-know-who”!

Well… after the gusty winds…
they now have a few less trees and one less totem pole!!!

Yes, the storm took out one of their largest trees, which in turn took out portions of other trees… and totally smashed my TOTEM POLE!!!

But like I tell my students… “It’s just clay!”

I was just happy that the tree fell where it did… damaging the trees & totem… and NOT my friends or their house! Could have been so much worse… luckily, they had a beautiful green bowl of chocolate to help with the aftermath… also made by “you-know-who”!

Sure, I still have some spoon rests in inventory…
Who knew everyone would be cooking so much at home these days??? All day. Every day. But had I somehow known about all of this COVID-19 craziness in advance & made a plan… I would have started making more spoon rests a lot sooner than tonight!!!

With everyone staying home, hunkering down, baking bread, and cooking more food in their own kitchens… it’s fun to see my pottery making a difference! Even in the smallest way… like this little spoon rest helping Deborah keep her curry sauce from smearing all over the countertop!!! Ha!!!
