A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

I found a beautiful patch of yellow lilies this morning just down the street. Loving the crisp brightness of yellow color… some with a hint of green, others with a smidge of orange. So striking. So beautiful.

As they get closer to finishing their sculptures, my Summer Campers this week would like to invite you another SCULPTURE GALLERY SHOW! Come see their birdhouses & oversized sculptures this Friday afternoon from 3:00-3:30pm at Lillstreet Art Center!

And as always… Rule #3… if you make the mess, you WILL be cleaning it up! Rosie was a trooper… and cleaned up her mess on the floor, and then just kept on going! Fun with the sponge… wiping the floor & sliding on her knees!

Yep, another week of gooey-sloppy fun playing with plaster gauze building our larger sculptures! They start with building an armature structure out of cardboard boxes, wire, chicken wire, newspaper, more wire and a LOT of masking tape. Today they covered the armature with a layer plaster gauze. Tomorrow we add on details & textures… and then start painting to make them really come to life!

So now I’ve wiped off the top layer of tenmoku glaze so you can see the geometric shapes even better. I’ve also added the liner glaze to all of them. The request was for the colors to mimic the colors of the wedding… which is based off of a “fig.” Yes, the fruit. So we decided that the liner glaze would be a purpleish-plum color. Fingers crossed that they look good after the soda-firing!

Starting the mug glazing process… putting some tenmoku glaze into the stamped details. When they dry, I’m going to wipe the high surfaces so that the glaze stays inlaid in the indentations.

A bit on the cloudy side this morning. Lots of wispy clouds blowing through & shrouding the sun as it tried to peek through. Eventually, it made a valiant effort and found its way through the hazy clouds for a fun splash of reflection along the lakefront.

Looks like Rosene is getting creative in the garden again… adding some begonias to her stamped & soda-fired teapot. A cute little planter to spruce-up the picnic table on the deck!

Remember, the oversized flowerpot I threw for my Advanced Wheelthrowing class last session?… well, I made a large water drip tray to go with it. I decided to skip the stamps as it will sit under the flowerpot that already has plenty of stamps!

AND THEN I GOT THIS!!!

The water drip tray just came out of the bisque kiln… and the kiln un-loaders left me a note. Thanks for noticing… thanks for pointing this out Chuck!!!

So their terra cotta birdhouses are all glazed… and my Summer Campers now need to wait patiently to see how they look when they come out of the kiln on Friday!!!
