Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play
Categories: classes, process, production, textures

Last week in one of my pottery classes, we tackled some surface decoration using thick white slip for textures & patterns. Sure, I could have used colored slip… but I’m more intrigued by how the glazes might play well with these cool textures & grooves!

Looks like Spring is finally here… the May Flowers are a little early, although we’ve had more than enough April Showers!!!

Sure, blame the cat… according to Allison…

“My cat broke your mug. So someone just got screamed at, told he was a bad boy, and grabbed by the nape of his neck! Well, I need to buy a NEW one to replace the one Apollo just broke!”

And then she continues…
“I was soooo mad at him Gary! And it was fine before bed. He was being TOO curious. My Mom called him a brat. I agree. Think he just wanted to see what would happen, but now the lower shelf on the cup shelf will probably no longer have cups.”

Okay, so this may have dropped a few days ago… but I had a lot of pots to glaze, a soda kiln to fire & taxes to do. But now that all three of those tasks are done… the “reward” will be coming soon! I can’t wait to binge the newest season of THE GREAT POTTERY THROW DOWN on HBO Max!!! No spoilers, please…

Kickin’ off the new week with a little bright spot… working its way through the urban landscape to brighten the day! Happy Monday!!!

Looks like Jody has been baking for her family & celebrating Easter with a special carrot cake… even if it might have fallen to pieces coming out of the pan?! Ha!!!

Still looks great on a nice platter with frosting drizzled everywhere!!!
I mean, I would still eat it.

HAPPY EASTER… or whatever holiday you might be celebrating this season… and just hoping that you take time to notice the small details & appreciate the special moments along the way!

One of the “benefits” of being stuck in my studio all day yesterday while firing the soda kiln… is being able to get a lot of side odd projects done. Like turning out my latest batch of reclaimed clay… now sitting on a large plaster bat drying up until it’s good to wedge up and start over with some new “free” clay!!!

HAPPY EASTER… and enjoying this hidden bunny amongst the coleus garden! Just a reminder that I will be doing a PLANTS & POTTERY POP-UP SALE in the Peoria area on Friday, May 13th & Saturday, May 14th. Plenty of homegrown coleus, hostas, annuals & houseplants… along with lots of pottery!!! More details to come!

My kitchen windowsill is currently abloom… with a few orchids re-blooming just in time for NATIONAL ORCHID DAY today! Their timing is impeccable as they just started opening two days ago… and they’re pretty splashing some color in my kitchen! Good thing they seem to “thrive” with neglect… cause I’m not the best at remembering to water them!!!
