A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

In my Thursday morning pottery class, I did a little demo of my wheelthrown & handbuilt “combo” textured mugs. Well, they’re all assembled and I just dipped them in colored flashing slip. I didn’t want a bunch of crazy drips to run down onto the trimmed bottom… so I supported them upside-down on kiln posts until the slip set-up a bit.

Doing a little carving on another TEXTURE TUESDAY!
Carving textures instead of stamping… for a change!

Last night in class, Darcy asked if she could borrow some of my DiamondCore Carving Tools… and of course I said YES!!! She was excited to try some carving on her large vase from last week’s class… and was kind of amazed at how sharp & crisp the lines were!!!

After spreading some “good fortune” for the New Year by hiding twenty-one fortune cookies for an “Illinois Beach State Park Scavenger Hunt”… I figured it was time to replenish the inventory a bit. So much fun to make these little cuties. This is just the first batch… I’m sure there will be more to come!!!

It might be freezing cold outside, but the bright winter sun is making things “striking” inside! Especially as the sun is highlighting textures & striking great shadows across some of my textured tiles! Thanks Ann for sharing your tiled trivets with us… now pass on some of that candy too!!!

And now for some more SNOW!!! With a beautiful “lace” build-up of ice on a broken screen outside the studio windows. The tree branches outside have done a number on the screen… but the icy snow made it pretty!

Not my window… not MY problem!

Spent some time in the studio this afternoon working on my class demo bowls from Tuesday night. A little bit of stamping & detailing can make a big difference. You know I’m a member of the “MORE IS MORE” club!!!

And back under the plastic they go… so they can dry up a bit more before I trim the bottoms. This last one “might” even get a handle over the top to make it like a little “basket-bowl”!!!

The second large bowl from yesterday’s demo had a flared-out rim just screaming for some decoration. “HEY, DECORATE ME!!!”

So here’s the bowl after some stamping…
and a glimpse at the stamp that did all of the work!

One of the bowls from yesterday’s class demo was a basic round bowl desperately in need of some decorating. Today I stamped the exterior of the bowl, leaving fingerprint indentations on the inside. Sure, I could have stopped there… but instead continued with a small stamp for added details inside & out, and a little extra fluting along the rim!

My large bowls from yesterday’s class demo are now stamped… shocking, right?! I always tell my students that the wheel makes the bowls round, but it’s up to them to make the bowls SPECIAL! I choose to stamp textures & patterns… but I encourage my students to follow their own path and to decorate their bowls to make them their own creations!!!
