Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

Stamping mugs again… using my own handmade clay stamps to make the impressions. I press them in when the clay is a soft-leatherhard. Still a little malleable, but not at all sticky. If the pots dry out too much, the stamp won’t go in deep enough to make a good impression.

Next up we need to do some trimming… carving out a footring on the bottom! Then a few handles… and voila’... soon we’ll have more mugs!!!

All stamped & detailed with colored flashing slip. Set aside for the night as they start to dry… for an upcoming bisque kiln! Meanwhile, freshly thrown pots cover my work table hoping that they stiffen up enough overnight so I can stamp them tomorrow!

A little early morning stamping… larger vases getting patterned & textured. So now they need some trimming & colored flashing slip accents before they start to dry!

No chance for a sunrise on this overly cloudy morning, so I did some early-morning stamping instead! No sweat… literally.

So after last week’s bowl demo for my Beginning Wheel students… and a little fun in class turning them into “not-so-basic bowls”… I “may have” taken them upstairs into my studio to do a little more stamping, decorating & trimming. You know my theory… MORE IS MORE!

Today is NATIONAL FLUFFERNUTTER DAY!!!
A childhood favorite… and we can consider this as “carbo-loading,” right?!

So I did a plate-throwing demo in class this week… but who wants a “plain” dinner plate?! Not me… more is more, right?! So I just did a bit of stamping to make it a bit more fun… all done with one handmade clay stamp pressed in one-by-one-by-one-by-one!

The Fall coolness may be in the air today, but that doesn’t mean that the flowers are done showing off. Like these beautiful green hydrangeas that look perfect in a stamped & soda-fired vase!

Sure, I coulda gotten some fresh vegetables… but instead I picked up a nice chunk of bleu cheese at the Farmer’s Market on my way home today! Looks like a great “appetizer”… yum, my favorite!!!

But then again, not everyone loves purple… so there will also be a couple stamped plates & platters in other fun colors at ART IN THE GARDEN too! Remember, homemade food always tastes better on handmade pottery!
