A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

Not a cloud in the sky this morning. Just another sculpture along the lakefront bike trail. I didn’t see any signage to tell us who made this one… but we’ll say Thank You just the same!

And here’s the “non-silhouetted” & “non-sunrised” version… so close to the bike trail, and my bike!!!

A warm & humid start to the day, with layered clouds brightening the sky…
and a beautiful ride down to the South Side and back.

And a fun, sunrise-watching sculpture on the South Side by Tom Friedman.

And of course we needed a demo piece to show the kids how to build little three-dimensional “Chess-sculptures.” And what dragon wouldn’t want to be sitting on top of a brick turret while breathing fire?!

It was a fast week of making Chess Sets with my Summer Camp kids this week. Right up until the deadline, they were painting, detailing and cleaning up. And by the “closing bell,” every camper had finished their chess set. And with that ends another week of Summer Camp!

So we’re in the middle of Chess Camp, and one of my kids is “struggling” with focus, attention and generally being “able” to make the chess pieces we’ve all been working on. And then all of a sudden out of nowhere, in about 5 minutes, he cranks out this adorable lizard!!! A bit too large for a chess piece, and nothing to do with his theme, but an amazing piece of kid’s sculpture!!!

Let’s just say “the jig is up” and I’m onto his game.
He OBVIOUSLY is “able” to make things… now if he could just focus?!

There’s a new “inhabitant” looming along the lakefront. A large bronze sculpture by Thomas Houseago between Foster & Bryn Mawr. A little eerie this early in the morning…

And that’s quite some “vertebrae” of rebar armature on the backside!

Always fun to find new artworks dotting the Lakefront Bike Trail. Like this whimsically enormous guy gazing up to the skies down on the South Side clad in stainless steel of all kinds. If you look closely, you’ll find cookie sheets, muffin tins and so many more wonderful finds!!! Well done Tom Friedman!

Wonderful & “hand”some gazing ball sculpture in Berger Park. I’ve ridden through the park many times over the years… and yet today was the first time I ever noticed this wonderful piece of art.

So our bike ride along the Lakefront was a LOT less flooded. Blue skies, a bit of wind and a LOT of sweat!!! Great fun pedaling with Chris… and admiring some art & sculptures along the way! This beauty is just a block or so north of the South Shore Country Club.

Down on the south side of the bike trail, just north of Promontory Point, there’s this wonderfully large sculpture along side the lake. Constructed of steel tubing and plastic water bottles! Fits in perfectly with the moody misty morning sky.
