A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

Sure, the “Quite White Collection” might be the new big thing… all the rage!
But there were a few colors in the same glaze kiln!!!
I especially like how these two glazes really accentuate the stamps on these mugs.

My kiln is still a little too warm to unload…
so I took off a couple layers of bricks to speed it up.
And look what I found front & center?… a nice new stamped vase!!!
Hope there’s more beautiful things inside later tonight!!!

Almost ready to start loading. My pots are glazed, wadded and separated by shelf depending on what kind of clay it is. I like to stack my soda kiln with porcelain in the back, B-clay in the medium soda areas, and soda clay where it will get more soda exposure.

After glazing a lot of pieces, and spraying some colored glaze accents,
the build-up of the over-spray area dried up and started flaking off. Kinda cool to see it falling off in flakes, some more in larger sheets of dried glaze!

Getting ready for my soda kiln…
so I glazed and added some colored slip accents to my latest batch of textured tiles. They still need to be wadded… with a LOT of wads, as I want to keep them as flat as possible. And let’s just say, the soda kiln doesn’t have a good reputation for keeping things flat & unwarped.

So the spoons are getting one step closer to completion..
and I for one can’t wait to see how they turn out.

I added a temoku glaze inlay to most of them… as well as in the spoon itself.
And then gave some of them a slight spraying with a colored glaze for a pop of color.

And so the glazing continues… painting temoku glaze on top of the stamped impressions. I let it dry and then I wipe off the top layer with a damp sponge. That way the temoku glaze stays in the impressions and make the stamped texture really pop!

No exploded bottoms from firing my vases while they were still wet.
Even more to glaze tonight. Success!!!

Tonight I started glazing… and I have a LONG road ahead of me.

I need to have everything glazed & wadded by Friday so I can load the soda kiln. I’m starting with inlaying some temoku glaze into the stamped impressions. Once they are “covered” with glaze, I will carefully wipe off the top surface to reveal the glaze-filled stamp.

Tonight I got home from a wonderful weekend of pottery in Minnesota.
And I went straight to the studio to do some more glazing.

My studio neighbor Karen was loading a kiln of her own work, and had some extra space.
So I volunteered to be the filler. I glazed up a few pieces and loaded the bottom half of the back stack for Karen’s cone 10 reduction kiln.
