Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

One of my favorite booths today at the 57th Street Art Fair was that of Robin Kittleson. I met Robin a few years back when she was across the aisle from me at Art In The Barn in Barrington. Now generally I’m not a huge fan of fused glass. So frequently it’s very bright, kinda geometric and more than a little gaudy. And then there’s Robin’s amazing twist on fused glass. Her pieces are amazing!!! The colors. The designs. The intricacy. Amazing!!!

She may have just won me over… maybe fused glass CAN BE a lot cooler than I thought?

Remember the good old days when you liked to pull out the colored pencils and a coloring book?! Well, now you can do it again and support my friend & fellow artist Allison by supporting her Kickstarter campaign. “DAYDREAMERS” is an original coloring book drawn by Allison and her partner in Artillicious! Grab one quick before they’re gone. Relax… Doodle… And support the arts all at the same time!

Here’s a pretty amazing technique to decorate the inside of a bowl. Always an awkward place to get into without altering the pattern or the bowl. Well, here’s a way to alter BOTH that looks so perfect you’d have no idea of what it went through to get to this point. My students know I’m not a big fan of the heat gun… but for this technique it might just be worth it?! File this one under “Things I Definitely Need To Try.”

What a fun technique… pressing colors through patterns? Who’da thunk? I will definitely need to try this one. Might be a fun project to try with my students? Thank you Ceramic Arts Daily for sharing Meredith Host’s video excerpt from her DVD : “Form, Pattern and Underglaze: Wheel Throwing and Decoration.”

To kick-off April, I’ve decided to start my new Nutritious Raw Food Diet.
Not really sure how it works, but a lot of people swear by it.
And I’m all for giving it a valiant effort. I’m willing to take one for the team.

We had some “colorful” fun with my family & cousins from Minnesota doing some Easter egg coloring. Many were simple color dips… but I went for the “textured” grid effect using a rubber grippy pad & rubber bands! I happened to find the grippy grid things in the grocery aisle… darn those impromptu add-on sales items!

Worked well on the first one… so I ventured out into a two-toned world! With a band of rubber grid. Half dipped in yellow, and then half dipped in blue…  overlapping for green?!

Christopher was right there trying the new technique with great results… and focus!

A good time was had by all.
We ended with some colored fingertips and some very vibrant eggs!

Well, I still have some old clothes back from my previous life in Corporate America… so this might be a great opportunity to clean out the closet AND get some really cool Easter Eggs at the same time. Almost seems too cool to be true?!

Then some creative wrapping of the egg with the “tie” squares. Tying them tight with strings.
The another layer wrapped with white fabric. Boil the bundled eggs… etc… then voila’…

The Easter Bunny will be hopping into town soon….
and I’m still looking for fun ways to decorate some eggs.
Here’s a fun & “natural” way to add some Spring colors & patterns to your eggs!

This movie looks pretty incredible. The style, the process, the visuals.
Apparently it’s the first time ever using this film-making process. Think of it as a stop-action, clay-mation type movie… but using individual oil paintings instead of clay?!!! Amazing… and slightly crazy, right? I’ll definitely be “Van Gogh-ing” to see this one! Would be great at the Drive-In under some beautiful Starry, Starry Night.
