Due to my own Christmas packing & wrapping klutziness,
I just broke one of my own mugs. It just “jumped” right off the shelf. I swear.

Good to see the insides of your pots once in awhile though.
Nice too see evenly thrown, thin walls. No one wants a heavy mug!!!
And as for the broken mug… my students would eagerly quote right back at me
“IT’S JUST CLAY.”

As part of our last class, we also had a fun exchange of cups, saucers & mugs.
My contribution to the trading game was the class demo with marbled clay…
fired unglazed on the exterior to show the marbling, with Shaner White glazed interior.

My take-home-from-the-trade was this sweet cup & saucer by my student Catherine.
Thrown with porcelain, some underglaze accents of color and a thinly sprayed layer of Shaner Clear glaze. Great trade. Great cup. Thank you Catherine for the “upgrade”!!!

Summer is definitely over… as proven by the latest selection of OREO flavors!!!
Tonight was the last class of the Fall pottery session. We celebrated with a fun potluck…
with some obligatory Oreo’s!!! No surprise there, huh???

One of my students has been “bitten” by the holiday ornament bug. Throwing them off the hump & adding a handbuilt top the same way I do. I love when students follow along and try the class demo, embrace it and begin to make it their own. And here she is now making her own batch of beautiful, wheelthrown ornaments. Well done Marni!

Here’s a great little article about learning to throw clay on the wheel.
To some the process is magical, relaxing & zen-like. To others there’s frustration, aggravation & a big dirty mess. I love working with my Beginners to get the through the tough first few weeks of class. We’re now in Week 7 and it’s great to see them having fun & creating great pieces… and breathing.

So when we did the basic bowls demo last week for my class, I also explained to them the benefit of throwing on a plastic bat. Better pots. More “round” bowls. Less squishing. No need to “pick up” a freshly thrown bowl. Easier to move around on the bat. Who knew that they would take my advice to heart?! They got their act together and ordered well over 50 plastic bats online!!! Most of them now have their own bats to work with… and such a great green color. Mine are basic boring brown. Must say I’m kinda jealous!!!

Thank you Katie for coordinating the class order.
Now I can’t wait to see what they all make on their new bats!!!
