For this week’s LILLSTREET THROWDOWN class project, I decided to kick it off with a little visual inspiration! Only Mother Nature can create this amazing collection of shapes, colors & textures! But my students were going to give it a try too!!!

To start this week’s LILLSTREET THROWDOWN class, my students had a homework assignment… to carve patterns, designs or stories onto the 6-inch cubes they made the week before!

They came back with amazing pieces… but it was Clara that really ROCKED IT OUT!!! Her winning cube was based on some “bullfrog” rap song… which she actually brought in to play for us as she “presented” her finished cube!!! All five sides tell the story… with the bottom as “The End.”

Simply AMAZING!!!

Last session, my friend & fellow teacher Chelsea was doing a class on different glazing techniques. And I “just happened” to have this large un-stamped & un-glazed vase on my teacher’s shelf… leftover from my Surface Decoration class almost a year ago! Good intentions for a good demo… but I never quite got around to it in class… don’t judge!

So I offered it up for Chelsea to play with as one of her class demos! Everyone knows that glazing is my least favorite step of the process… so if someone else volunteers, I’m all in! And she did an amazing job with several different glazes & techniques all playing well together! Thanks Chelsea… you can glaze more of my stuff any time!!!

Last night was the first night of our new “season” of THE GREAT LILLSTREET THROWDOWN! A fun class full of challenges, contests & projects! To kick-off the “season” I challenged them with both wheelthrowing & handbuilding tasks with a geometric twist… and a bit of multitasking! The challenge was a wheelthrown sphere, a 6-inch slab-built cube, and a 12-inch coil-built cone. Each with a limited time frame, as the challenges start to “pile-up” on each other as the night went on.

I always enjoy watching how my “contestants” approach a challenge, manage their time, and finish it all off in the end. It was a fun night & a fun challenge… and they all did great!!! We’re off to a great start.

So they started off with wheelthrowing a perfectly round sphere!

Part way into their allotted time for the sphere… I stopped the clock, called them over, and they found out about having to make a 6-inch cube with slabs. So now they had TWO projects to work on… multi-tasking & considering how to best utilize their limited time!

A little further into the challenge… we stopped the clock one more time… wished Melanie a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!… and then added a third challenge. They now had to also make a 12-inch tall coil-built cone!!!

So they now had all three challenges… and some more time to multi-task… so they kind of bounced around the place trying to finish all three in time!!!

At the end of the time, we pulled all three pieces together for critique & judging. We chose our top sphere, top cube & top cone… as well top trio!

Okay, so maybe one of the cones didn’t quite get finished in time… but bonus points for getting so creative with it!!!

But then there was one last-minute challenge… a little homework for the team! The cubes are not quite done… their “homework” is o take their cubes homes and do some creative textural carving on them for judging next week!

So I finally finished up assembling my last class demo from the December session at Lillstreet. It was a final “demo-on-demand” for Dan… a teapot with a knobby handle on the side instead of a normal handle. Honestly, I’ve never made one like this before… but I’m always up for a challenge! Sure, it may have taken awhile, but I think it turned out okay… for my first one! Thanks for the challenge Dan!

I’ve had these photos for awhile… but never to late for a little flashback to my Intermediate Wheelthrowing class last Fall when we focused on making mug handles for the night! I showed them how I pull my handles separately… starting with a little carrot-shaped nugget of clay. Smoothy & evenly pulled, then looped over on themselves so they can stiffen-up with a nice curved loop. So many people avoid making mugs because they HATE making handles… but it was my goal to get this group over that hurdle through simple repetition.

So excited to see that the new cast of the next GREAT POTTERY THROWDOWN has been announced… as the new season begins airing tonight in the UK. Unfortunately, we need to wait for awhile to see it here in the US.

Can’t wait that long?… there are still a few spots open in my upcoming pottery class at Lillstreet Art Center… THE GREAT LILLSTREET THROWDOWN. This will be “Season Four” for our own version of challenges, contests & projects! If you’re in the Chicago area, sign-up soon to be part of the fun starting on Thursday, January 13th!

Last night, my Intermediate Wheel class did a festive Christmas Tree trading-stealing-exchange game to celebrate our final class of the session… and the HOLIDAYS! I came home with this sweet tree that Molly made… possibly the pointiest of all the trees in the lot… with groovy carvings & textures!

Looks like a “festive forest of fun” has popped up on the “show-off shelves” at Lillstreet! There’s been a lot of Christmas Trees sprouting up everywhere, as all the cool kids are making ’em!!! And I’m looking forward to my Intermediate Wheel class tomorrow night as we are doing a Christmas Tree trade for our final class!

Last night I helped one of my students load her very FIRST KILN!

Christine has been testing every underglaze & clear glaze in class… and has been wanting to test the commercial celadons in cone six. So she saved some of her stamped work from class, spray-glazed them up with commercial glazes… and soon enough we should have some beautiful pots to show off! Can’t wait to see your results Christine!!!
