Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play
Categories: art fair

This weekend was beautiful… okay, except for one little weather “situation.”

Saturday started out hot & humid with no breeze. Very sticky. At some point, the breeze
kicked in and the humidity seemed to drop a bit. We had a great day with a lot of great
customers stopping by to play in my booth. including my Northwoods potter-friend Amy
Higgason who surprised me with a visit! I didn’t even know she was in town! But as the day
went on, there were “rumors” of a big storm moving in. Late in the afternoon, everywhere
you looked there were people checking their smartphones for weather radar updates!
Soon enough, everyone was getting panicked as there were reports of a huge storm headed
our way! Reports of storm wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. Announcements over the PA,
staff members alerting all of the artists, and urgent panicked messages that we should pack
up and get out as soon as possible. Yes, we literally got evacuated from the art fair!!!

So we packed down the pottery as much as we could. Put most of the pots back into their
crates and lowered almost everything onto the floor of my booth. Tightening the anchor straps,
zipping down the sides and hoping for the best. At some point, you just need to trust that
everything will be okay… and you leave with fingers crossed. So mu parents and I went to
have dinner in Evanston. While we were there, the storm came crashing through with huge
winds, followed by crashing rain, and then it was over almost as quick as it came in.
A big sigh of relief… and then the skies cleared. However, the art fair was closed and we were
done for the day! Hoping for a better Sunday.

Later that night, we also found out that the storm was apparently worse downtown.
And the huge crowd of concert-goers down at Lollapalooza were actually evacuated as well…
picture thousands of people evacuated into the Grant Park underground parking garage!!!

Sunday was gorgeous! The humidity was gone, the sun was shining and it was perfect.
There was a great breeze coming in from the lake keeping it very cool & comfortable. In fact,
towards the end of the day, my Mom actually mentioned that she was “cold.” Go figure!
But to the rest of us, it was “picture perfect.”

And here’s the most beautiful “backyard view” from my booth. Yes, my booth literally backs up
to Lake Michigan. So not only do I get to enjoy the cooling breeze coming in off the lake while
chatting & playing with my friends & fans… but I also get this incredible view all day long!

I’m ready to set out for another wonderful weekend art fair in the park.
The Evanston show is always one of the most beautiful shows with a wonderful
view of the Chicago lakeshore. My booth literally backs up to the beach!
Celebrate the summer with a fun day in the park.

Lots to choose from – bowls, mugs, vases, salt & pepper shakers, and much more!
Functional stoneware can be used every day, as it’s food-safe, dishwasher-safe
and microwave-safe. You can even bake in it. Everything is handmade & one-of-a-kind.

Evanston Lakeshore Arts Festival : Booth #42
Located in Dawes Park on Sheridan Road between Church & Davis.
I’ll be in the same booth space as usual at the southeast end of the pond.
Enjoy the view, enjoy the breeze, enjoy the shade!

Saturday, August 4th : 11:00am-6:00pm
Sunday, August 5th : 11:00-6:00pm
Plenty of time to enjoy the Chicago lakefront and see a lot of beautiful art
in the park. I will be bringing a full assortment of work, both functional & decorative!
Hope to see you there!

The Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival was great fun this weekend.
Thanks to all of the great friends & customers who stopped by to play with us!
Lots of returning customers, some we haven’t see for awhile… plus a bunch
of new ones we hope to see a lot more of! So much fun all weekend long!
My sales were pretty great too – thanks for that as well. Oh yeah…
and another ribbon ain’t too shabby either!

Plus, the weather was surprisingly great. It was sunny & warm both days.
I was expecting hot & humid – they were predicting 90-plus-degrees both days.
But with the shade from my favorite tree on my tent all day and a cool breeze blowing
through, we may have had the coolest booth at the entire fair…
and the temperature was pretty nice too!          Ha.

All set up and ready to go at the Hinsdale Fine Arts Festival.
It’s going to be a beautiful weekend under the best shade tree in the park!!!

Two days of fun in Burlington Park. Both days from 10:00am-5:00pm.
Saturday, June 9th & Sunday, June 10th, 2012.
And the shelves are packed with LOTS of pots!!! Come early for the best selection!

It was great this year… as there were two empty booth spaces right next to me.
So I “spread” out a bit and created the Fire When Ready Garden Shop! Complete with
textured terra cotta planters, windowsill herb flower pots and groovy garden stakes!

Plus a little shameless self-promotion along the way never hurt anything…
especially if it’s about my big TV debut tonight on HGTV!!!

Today was a lot sunnier than yesterday… and a LOT hotter…
thankfully we had a wonderful breeze blowing through all day.
It would have been unbearable without the breeze.

Special thanks again to all of my wonderful customers who stopped by to say hello!
Especially three of my students from this current session at Lillstreet Art Center.
Thanks to Laury, Linda and Tracy who shlepped all the way out to the ‘burbs…
each of which have been doing an incredible job in our Wheelthrowing Class.

So, sure I could show you some nice pottery shots… some pictures of my work.
Or, I could show you some of the beautiful flowers that graced my booth this weekend.
Including some purple Queen Anne’s Lace, orange alstromeria, lotus pods, green rosehips,
white tulips, fragrant stock and more! Plus some little glimpses of pottery!

My Textured Slab Vases never looked better than with one of my all-time favorite flowers…
kind of a strange plant with great colors, incredible textures and funky structure.
It’s called Kangaroo Paw – and it’s crazy cool!!!

After the clouds moved out, the customers came to shop.
It was great to see so many of my dedicated followers stop by to say hello!
Plus, it was great to get two award ribbons this weekend as well…
not just one, but TWO!!!

The first ribbon was a special Merit Award from the show organizers
Not quite “Best Of Show”… but always nice to be recognized for your hard work & creative
efforts. Plus, the prize is basically reimbursement of my booth fee!                               Sweet.

The second was a Special Sponsor Award from Dr. Bruce & Lynne Peterson.
Apparently, local businesses “pledge” to purchase a certain amount during the fair. Then,
people from the company come to the show and decide who they want to award & spend
their money with. Well, I was lucky enough to be chosen for one of these awards.
So I not only got a cool ribbon & certificate… I also sold more work!!!
