Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

And oh, but wait there’s more… something weird is going on here?!
All of my orchid plants seem to be on a kick lately! Here’s another orchid that’s re-blooming for me… no special care except the usual neglect. I guess they’re loving quarantine a lot more than me!!!

Okay, so this Chicago Curfew is really messing with my sunrise bike rides…
as the sun rises before the curfew is lifted!!!…
and you know how I like to play by the rules?!

So instead, here’s a little morning beauty to start your day. This orchid started re-blooming during quarantine even though I did nothing special to make it happy… except maybe a nice flower pot? It’s doing great… and making ME happy every time I see it.

Starting with some pinch pots… back to Handbuilding 101.

I’m not sure how long these “birds” will take me, and I want to keep them moist & workable. So I’ve added a plaster slab into the bottom of a plastic container. I just pour some water onto the plaster slab which soaks it up instantly… and a lot more water than you would expect. Then I can just set my pieces on top of the damp plaster, close the lid and everything will be pretty much as I left it… and ready for more attachments!

Still under wraps… procrastinating as usual these days… but gotta focus and get these moving along! Using some photo references to formulate my plan. This project is gonna be “for the birds.”

And no… this is NOT an episode of “Portlandia.”

After the protest, riots & destruction that swept through Aurora this weekend, my friend & amazing painter Cheryl Holz has spent the next couple days doing what she can to help her town recover. So of course… SHE’S PAINTING!

Making the town look alive, vibrant & open for business.
Trying her best to be part of the solution.
Making a difference.
Using her talent for a good cause.

While everyone is looking for a little more brightness & joy these days… it was great to turn a corner on my bike this afternoon and run across this colorful mural under a bridge. It made me smile. Thank You MollyZ for making Rogers Park a little more beautiful… and for helping make people smile even during these tough times!

Beautiful cherries draining off in their new berry bowl! Love the color contrast… as well as Nature’s organic shapes contrasting with the repetitive stamped texture! Thanks as always for sending me your “pottery-in-use” photos!!!

WHY CAN’T IT JUST BE THIS EASY?!
So simple through the eyes of a child…
making their mark on the world as they want it to be.

Good words for us ALL to live by!

Some more bowls dry and ready to go into the next bisque kiln. I don’t really “do” nesting bowls very often… but after looking at these “unplanned” ones, I may need to re-think that?!
