Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play
Categories: process, stamped, vases

Just adding some last-minute slip accents to the latest batch of stamped vases. I’ve painted the top “smooth” area with a colored flashing slip… and then a tiny touch of slip in the center, raised area of each stamp. During the soda firing, the color of the flashing slip will become more apparent.

I hope you’ve made your plans for some great pottery fun this weekend!
C’mon… make it a fun road-trip weekend to Minnesota and play with the rest of us. I’ll be there mingling, admiring, networking, shopping, collecting and hanging out with the rest of the cool kids! You should be one of them too!!! There will be a TON of great pottery up there made by some wonderful potters.

Sadly, I’m not one of them… yet. Dare to dream, right?!

Tonight I tackled my newest batch of vases. I threw them on Sunday and they’ve been wrapped up since then. Tonight I stamped them for some great surface decoration. Some with “banded” patterns on the shoulder of the vase. Others with a full texture all the way down to the bottom.

So for now they’re stamped and wrapped.
Tomorrow I’ll do some trimming and adding of colored slip accents.

Sure this morning was a downpour… so I rolled over and went back to sleep.
But yesterday… the clouds were rolling through and “threatening” rain. I dodged the majority of it, but felt a couple sprinkles. I especially love when you can actually see the rain falling from the clouds… and it’s NOT on me!!!

After the sprinkles… after the rain… the clouds were still lingering blocking
any chance of a real sunrise. Instead we got wonderful drama!

Glazed up a bunch of pieces that I’m hoping to squeeze into another studio member’s gas reduction kiln later this evening. Trying something a little new for me… let’s hope it works ‘cuz I’m diving in?!

Closing in on some “kiln deadlines”…
and yet still throwing a little larger today. Taller vases & bigger bowls.

Today I had a chance to go to a local metal manufacturing plant. We were there to get some simple, galvanized steel sheets. Not nearly as exciting as these large copper architectural pieces that they also manufacture there. Next time I need to take the tour to see these being made!!!… if they even offer a tour?!

Either way you look at it… backwards or forwards…
it was a beautiful morning sunrise to kick-off Palindrome Friday!
