Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play
Categories: theater

Last night was fun night of musical theater with my friend Pam. We saw a production of the Stephen Sondheim classic “Into The Woods.” Very clever. Lots of witty words in quick rhymes & slick timing. Very fun. If you haven’t heard of it… it’s where they take most of the popular fairy tale characters and throw them all together in one story. So it’s Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Prince Charming, and another Prince Charming, The Baker and His Wife, Jack, his Beanstalk and many more!!! An entertaining evening at the Mercury Theater in Chicago.

After a LONG Winter here in Chicago, we are now left with huge,
gaping potholes seemingly on every street!!!

I was so excited today to see that “someone” is creatively doing something about them. So much better than what the City is doing… just leaving a loose pile of asphalt “in, on, around, somewhere near” the holes and hoping that “somehow” it gets packed into the right place. This seems like a MUCH better plan!!!

Click here to see the video with mosaic artist Jim Bachor’s artistic remedy!

Sure, this might take awhile to catch on?… but if every artist “adopted” one pothole and did something equally as special as Jim’s solution, we might make an artistic dent in the pothole problem???

Here’s a beautiful shot from Marco Island, Florida from my cousin David.
He’s “suffered through” so many of my biking sunrise photos…
that he felt obligated to share a sunset from Spring Break with his family!!!!

And I loved it so much… that I felt “obligated” to share it with you!

C’mon, who could resist this once-a-year opportunity?!
Well, apparently NOT me!!! Let the games begin!

Another kiln loaded and ready to fire. I popped in the last few pieces just before sneaking off to class. A couple pieces were still a bit damp, so I set the kiln for an extended preheat before it kicks into high gear! Fingers crossed that things dry out during that time.

Kiln Layer #1 – mugs, soap dispensers, miniatures & tiles.

Kiln Layer #2 – wall pocket vases, bowls, miniature vases and tiles.

Kiln Layer #3 – new pie plates and tiles.

Kiln Layer #4 – stamped discs… that will eventually become ikebana flower vases.

Kiln Layer #5 – pie plates, bowls, soap dispensers & a lidded casserole.

Close to the top, but still a smidge of room. If only I had planned a little differently… I’m sure I could have squeezed even more in here!!!

Tonight is the first night of the new pottery session at Lillstreet.
My Beginning Wheelthrowing class is full and I’ve been pondering good pottery pranks for tonight. I was considering the Oreo prank, what with my penchant for Oreos and all. But that’s just plain mean for my unsuspecting newbie students.

Any other good “pottery prank” ideas for tonight’s class???

One of my FAVORITE holidays!!!

Very windy, not quite as nice this morning. With the wind coming from the west, it’s always a fun ride when it gusts “between” the buildings along Lake Shore Drive. Glad I put the extra layers back on… sweat & wind don’t mix so well.
