Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

Yesterday I rescued some “slightly-used” flowers from the “glitter gig.” I brought them into the studio to spruce up the place. I love the textures & colors of my new studio still-life.

I love your creative ways of texturing your pieces. I by no means want to copy your work but, you have really inspired me to try harder to add texture to my pieces and look around me for unique items to use to texturize. What are you intending to do with the textured rounds?

KAT – In my head, the textured rounds as you call them are going to be wall pillow tiles. Textured art pieces you can hang on your wall. I’m hoping to make them in three or four different diameters so people can buy a few of them to make their own little “clay constellation” on their wall. They’re still somewhat conceptual… but I’m moving forward with them as I don’t have time to really “test” them before making a bunch. That’s SO my style… dive in head first, make a bunch and hope for the best. I’m sure I’ll be posting more about them as they get a little further along in the process. Thanks for asking.

As for texturing your pieces, pretty much anything will work. Don’t worry too much about it. Just look around. Old kitchen tools. Hardware store knick-knacks. Garage sales. Old kids toys. The bottom of your shoe. Plus, don’t forget that you can make your own textures too. I’ve done several blog posts on how I make my stamps. And there are thousands of other ways to make textures. Just have fun… and don’t freak out over it!!!
