A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

Let me just say this upfront… there’s a LOT of pictures here!
But the sunrise was so beautiful this morning that I took over 100 photos!!!
I tried my best, but couldn’t narrow it down any further than these.
Sorry that you need to “suffer through” a bunch of beautiful sunrises today.
It was “painful” for me too!!!… ha!

After Summer Camp, I finished adding handles to my latest batch of mugs.

It was moving along quite nicely, until it was time to teach my evening adult class… and I still had TWO handles to add. I “almost” got them done. Just two more. Two more and I would have been done. Instead, I had to come back up to my studio after class to finish those last two!!! So now they’re all under wraps for the night – and I’ll add some colored slip accents tomorrow!

This week, my afternoon Summer Camp is wheelthrowing.

They just started yesterday, and yet by the end of today they had already trimmed, decorated & painted some with colored slip! Not bad for a bunch of pre-teen kids. And we still have three more days for this camp!!!

The day started out dark & moody. Lots of clouds. Lots of potential.
It wasn’t until I got down around Oak Street Beach that I saw the waves splashing up almost to the Lake Shore Drive S-curve! Guess I’m not swimming again this morning…

It was another crazy morning… windy, loud and full of crashing waves.
This morning my ride was all about timing. Timing was everything.
The waves were crashing all around and if you didn’t time it just right, you could easily get hit by a wave and wiped out, drenched by the wave… or caught off guard as you try to capture the splash with the camera!

The morning sky was beautiful shades of indigo blue. Lots of clouds. Lots of color.

Even the Chicago Skyline was clouded over…

As the morning continued, the indigo blue disappeared… and changed to shades of gray!

Another quiet morning before the weekend madness begins on the lakefront. With weather this perfect, the lakefront gets extra crowded… and kind of painful to ride through. I’m so used to having the path pretty much all to myself. So I try to avoid it when it gets too crazy!!!… like later this afternoon!!!

And then… talk about being at the right place at the right time… or maybe the wrong place??? Ever wonder what it’s like to be under a helicopter when it lands? And what it feels like to be pelted by debris and flying sand as it comes down to land?

Well, as “luck” would have it… when I was down along Ohio Street Beach taking pictures of the sunrise, a helicopter came flying in from the north. Then turned… and came right over me to land on Lake Shore Drive!!!

Yes, they had closed off LSD to road traffic, and the bike path a bit further south of me, as the helicopter was landing. Apparently, one of the old buildings along LSD is being renovated and they were flying construction supplies to the rooftop. And from the looks of it, they’ll be getting all new air conditioning units up there soon too!

Last night I continued my reclaiming of the “free” clay I got from Katie B.
The clay I had sliced thin was all dry, so I broke it up into small pieces and added it to my reclaim bucket. I then added enough water to cover the dried clay. Bubbles. Gurgling. And a slight hissing sound as the water seeped into the dry clay.

So now it sits… submerged & slaking. I’ll give it a few weeks, stir it up once & awhile, and when it’s ready… turn it back into “real” clay!!!

This morning I squeezed in another early morning ride. Luckily I got through the madness before the “Elvis Is Alive” 5K Run began… although there were already a few Elvises (or is it Elvi???) on the scene as I rode through. There’s gonna be a “Whole Lot Of Shakin’ Goin’ On” later this morning! Not me… but thousands of runners, many of them dressed up as Elvis Presley!!! I will be substitute teaching another pottery class later this morning.
