A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

With last night’s surface decoration demonstrations…
including some techniques from my friend & potter Amy Higgason

I was surprised with the HUGE coincidence of her posting some pictures
of her own work that she had done in her own studio up in Northern
Wisconsin that same day. So while we were “channeling” the carving style
of Amy Higgason, she was actually doing it too! And much better!!!

Here are some photos of the incredible platter she was working on…
See… THIS is how it’s supposed to be done!!! Stunning as always!!!

Check out more of Amy’s incredible work on her website or Facebook.

I adore this work – is she using sprig molds?? I am inspired.

KARLA – Yes, Amy uses a combination of carving, sprig molds and her own incredible illustration skills to create these masterpieces. They’re even more spectacular in person!

Gary, I am a potter who lives in Nevada. I’ve been a potter and watercolorist professionally for 20+ years. I am very creative (sometimes too much, lots of sleepless nights) and I love the challenge of a new task. I was recently asked to throw 250 bowls for an event similar to Empty Bowls. After the first 100, I wanted to challenge myself to think outside the box and adventure into texture. I found your work (and your very talented friends work) on the Internet. Thank you for getting me so excited about the endless possibilities with texture again. I haven’t made clay stamps by the dozen since college. I’m having a blast and the second half of my 250 bowls are turning out wonderful. Your website is now my favorite. Thank you for your generosity of technique and photos, from one unselfish artist to another, sincerely Sam (short for Margaret…it’s a long story)

HEY SAM… err, Margaret… okay, Sam…
Thank you so much for the kind words and great stories. I think it’s very important as an artist to be open & sharing, to promote yourself as well as your friends, and to just enjoy & appreciate the world around you. I love hearing stories of how my work & website have inspired people to do great things – or even just bring a smile to their face. And… I LOVE a challenge, but 250 bowls, wow!!! That’s impressive. Did you document any of it with photographs? I’m sure finishing the project, and seeing the collection of 250 bowls all together, was quite incredible!!! I’m so glad that I could be “part of” the challenge, and have inspired you along the way. Thanks again for the wonderful comments… “unselfishly yours”… GARY

Yes I am taking pictures as I go, I will try to send you a picture of all 250 once they’re fired. You’ll surely recognize that I made stamps to texture some of them …thanks to your wonderful inspiration. Thanks again. Sam

P.S. Amy’s work is incredible…leaves me speechless, or should I say textless?

I look forward to seeing the culmination of your wonderful bowl challenge!!! Send photos!!!

Yes… Amy is indeed brilliant!!!

how do I send photos? tried via your e-mail but it got sent back. I have been sooo inspired by you and Amy (and all your clay friends) that I’ve been going wild with texture. Sam

SAM -You should be able to send them as an e-mail attachment. Not sure why it’s not working unless the file size is just far too huge!!! Make sure the file size is manageable, less than 10MB, for the photos attached. You may need to send multiple e-mails with fewer pictures attached? I can’t wait to see your textures!!! GARY
