Gary Jackson: Fire When Ready Pottery
A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play
Categories: summer camp

We’re nearing the end of Summer Camp… only two more weeks… and some of the markers have seen better days. So this morning, when two of my campers came a bit early, I had them “volunteer” for a task… and they tested all of the markers!!! Throwing away the ones that were dried out. So much better now…

A little early-morning Summer Camp still-life…
red & ready… the calm before the storm!

And apparently THIS is something new?… I guess the class last night thought it was a good idea to dry their clay in front of a fan??? Too bad it was still there this morning with the fan still going!!!! My campers would never let this happen! Just sayin’…

We started the morning yesterday with some of my Summer Campers scraping & cleaning the ware boards they had uses the day before. No one likes a dry crusty ware board… wouldn’t it be nice if EVERYONE would do this before they put the shared ware boards back on the racks?!

Another humid & hazy morning. The humidity was so high that it felt like you were riding through thick air. Low-flying fog in many of the parks along the way. Nothing too dramatic, as the sunrise came up quietly shrouded in the morning haze.

So when the latest glaze kiln was unloaded at Lillstreet, I had SO many people stop by to tell me that one of my stamped platters was on the glaze cart. When I went to look for it… all I saw was this one… which was NOT mine!

Turns out it is one of my students who has truly taken my demos to heart. They say “imitation is the sincerest form of flattery”… but we also discuss how to take a technique and alter it a bit to make it your own “new” style! She was the first one to admit that she is not a creative person, but can see something & she can make it. The rest of the class dubbed her as “The Replicator.”

With ART IN THE GARDEN just a few weeks away, the artists are all working on their collaboration projects! Part of the novelty & fun of this art fair is that the artists get to play together & make unique artwork just for this show. Looks like Mary Foster has been doing some doodles… getting ready for our upcoming collaboration!

After a little stamping & detailing with colored flashing slips…
these cutie-patooties are going into a kiln soon. Just trying to get them done quickly so they can move along in the process… as there’s a “very good chance” they might just be a part of a collaboration project for ART IN THE GARDEN!

Always fun to receive the next packet of postcards from The Postcard Club! A little retro flashback fun of actually putting pen to paper & mailing out some postcards through snail mail. This quarter we received these beautiful cards with a creative twist… kind of a woodcut, retro illustration style!

Just finished stamping up another platter… with just one handmade stamp over & over again! Just in time for another Texture Tuesday!
