A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

Another week of pottery fun on “The Great Pottery Throw Down”
this time very illuminating & illustrative! Plenty of wheelthrowing which I could watch forever… but let’s just say there were some people struggling, some bisque explosions & some poor design choices! Good TV for all !!!

Now if only we had a little more snow…
I could totally get outside to make one of these “tasty” snow sculptures! HA!!!
Thanks to Snow Art Zone for the inspiration!

So excited that Christine’s latest batch of ornaments came out of the kiln beautifully just in time for Christmas! She made her first ornaments in my class last session and soda-fired them in my kiln. But now this batch she played even more with underglazes with a clear glaze in a high-fire kiln. Very festive & very fun!!!

You’ve got about two weeks to finalize your Holiday Gift List…
as my final HOLIDAY HOME SHOW is on Saturday, December 14th from 10:00am-6:00pm. A fun day with my friend & amazing metalsmith Amy Taylor joining me as my Guest Artist. Lots of pottery & jewelry for everyone on your list… and something special for you too!

One of the project “challenges” for my wheelthrowing class this session was to make a placesetting with pieces that work well together design-wise. We had a lot of fun this session…. but only one of them succeeded in the challenge. Look at this beautiful set with a lot of underglazed ombre gradations & graphic design accents made with thin tape as a resist while the underglazes were being applied. Beautifully done Christine!

Crazy cool sculptures by Shiyuan Xi – one of the Artists-In-Residence at Lillsreet. Loving how they catch light and cast shadows all at the same time! Currently on display in the Lillstreet Gallery Annex on the second floor!

Here’s “THE SHIP OF TOLERANCE” by Ilya & Emilia Kabakov that has been “docked” down on Navy Pier for the past month or so as part of EXPO Chicago. A wonderful art installation that utilizes a sail hand-painted by local schoolkids to highlight tolerance & inclusiveness. A wonderful concept for the kids to discuss & embrace. Sadly, today is the final day of the Ship’s tour of Chicago… as it will now sail off to its next destination.

Many of us have been fans of Brett Kern and his amazing ceramic sculptures of blown-up dinosaurs… including his tell-tale gold-plated valves! So imagine my surprise & disgust when I saw his work being blatantly plagiarized at BLICK ART SUPPLY!!! A place where you would assume they support artists and their livelihoods. Show your support by NOT buying these at Blick, but instead follow him on Instagram @brettkernart.
