A Chicago potter’s somewhat slanted view of clay & play

This morning was just gray, gray, gray…
lots of clouds without a sunrise in sight.

But then, sorta out of nowhere, this little gap in the clouds suddenly lit up with sunbeams trying their best to escape from behind the clouds. A moment of sunrise glory before plunging back into the grayness.

Another cloudy morning… with a cool breeze & dramatic reflections. A sliver of sunrise color before the clouds took over the morning.

Big sky sunrises need big scale photos!
Panoramic splashin’ waves along the lakefront this morning.

A splash-tastic morning along the lakefront today. Beautifully layered clouds changing colors as the waves came crashing in… always a challenge to capture the splash and yet not get soaked at the same time!

To celebrate the full moon, there was also another FULL MOON FIRE JAM along the lakefront just south of Foster Beach. It started out years ago as a small little event with a few fire twirlers, fire eaters & other spectacles. But it has grown to be a HUGE event with so many people showing up. Quite the crowd tonight… especially with the perfect evening weather!

After a full day of summer camp & an evening in the studio, I hopped on my bike and pedaled to the lakefront to see tonight’s SuperMoon!.. the last one of the year! The moon looked incredible… so big, so clear… but for some reason, the reflection photo looks a bit more like a sonogram?! Ha!

And tonight’s moon was called a Sturgeon Moon?…
apparently “this moon symbolizes gratitude for the bounties of nature, and asks us to step in to the flow and appreciate the fruits of all seasons and the unique beauties of the cycles of life.” Who knew?!

Carving through some white slip decoration… playing with my DiamondCore Tools again! Making fun leafy patterns through the widest band of white slip… to create a little color contrast when it’s glazed later.

So my campers this week started painting their big sculptures today… a lot of paint went on their sculptures… but some became palette “masterpieces” on paper plates too!!!

Always fun to finish another commission project… even if you “forget” to post pictures of it?! I loved how this set of side plates turned out… each with a different stamp pattern… half of them smooth, half of them with a groovy spiral. Thanks Chris for this fun project… so glad you loved them all. Can’t wait to get started our your new dinner plates now!!!
